Founded in 1928 as Butterworths Edinburgh Ltd, the business was submerged into Cambridge Optical in 1987. Subsequently taken over in 2002, it reverted to an independent lens laboratory focussed on the needs of independent optical practices thoughout the United Kingdom.

The company has experienced substantial growth over recent years and continues to grow, probably making it the most progressive specialist lens manufacturer and wholesaler in Scotland.
